PATTERN REVIEW - SIMPLICITY 1884 (again...)


I shall keep this one brief as both the pattern and the fabric are things that have been posted about recently. As I mentioned in my last post I had enough fabric left over from the dress to knock up this top previously blogged about here. 

In case you missed out on the fabric info in my last post, I used some jersey picked up from Simply Fabrics in Brixton. I have a special place in my heart for Simply Fabrics. It is true that there is a real mix of fabrics (and quality) but it is the perfect place to pick up fabric for wearable muslins as it is so cheap.



I pretty much made it up exactly the same as last time, I only made some minor changes.
These are:-

  • Omitted the tie in the front
  • Lengthened the front and back by 2"
  • Used rolled hems instead of bias binding (as I sewed this pattern with a stretch fabric)

The only thing that I will have in mind next time I am sewing this pattern with a stretch fabric is to perhaps stabilise the armholes with clear elastic to stop them from stretching. This hasn't happened yet, but I can see that the armholes will stretch over time.

I love how easy this is to make. This is most definitely earning a TNT pattern status. I am already thinking about what other fabrics I have in my stash that I can use on this pattern! It's such a comfy top to wear too. I mean look how happy it makes me...

I have a couple of things on the go (as I finished this top and dress a week or so before I went to Paris, but have been too lazy busy to blog about them).

One is Vogue 8711 which I have made previously and the other Vogue 8827. Both will be fruits of my recent Shepherd's Bush shopping trip. I am hoping to finish Vogue 8827 in time for a wedding, so fingers crossed it really is an easy Vogue!

Pattern Review: SonofaCrossStitch - Pride Tattoo PDF Pattern I am back with some instant gratification cross stitch. This simple pattern is from SonofaCrossStitch  and is the PDF Pride pattern .  This is a really simple pattern that I bought as a stash buster. I had some 16 count aida purchased during a clearance sale and I used up some of my leftover threads from previous projects. The pattern does have suggested fabric and thread suggestions, should you wish to follow them. It is also available as a kit, which would make nice present.  I have tried various finishing methods for my cross stitch, and decided on trying the felt backing method for a hoop, found in my Cross Stitcher Magazine. It is a neat method and prevents anything showing through from the back of the cross stitch project.  The was a really fun quick project and the PDF pattern is very affordable. Update and New Patterns

  New Look Patterns!   I have been a bit absent of late. This is partly because I have been away with work, but mostly because I took a sad trip to Wadderville.   But anyway, at least I have some new patterns (thanks to the New Look sale which meant these were all £2.95 each!) to soothe my wadder woes...     New Look 6122     I would make this pattern as a cute halter top - not a dress. I would like to maybe make view A as a cute top too.     New Look Pattern 6122       Who doesn't love a fun maxi dress - I think that the shorter version is nice too, but I would have to make sure that it doesn't bunch too much at the tummy, especially as this pattern is drafted for a knit rather than a woven.     New Look 6782   Nothing very exciting here - just some standard wardrobe building.     New Look 6123     I have seen lovely reviews of this dress and think that it would be particularly nice in a stretch woollen.   Ne

February Garment of the Month

Pattern Review: Vogue 1387 I have to admit that my sewing mojo has been so low I wasn't sure February's garment was going to happen. Quite a few fellow sewers have mentioned that they have not been as productive as hoped during February, so maybe there has been something in the air? That said, I pulled it out of the bag to finish my muslin for this  Vogue 1387 Rebecca Taylor pattern. I initially fell in love with the pleats in the shoulders and the sleeve bands. Aren't they fab little details?? However there have been mixed reviews on Pattern Review, so although the line drawings looked simple enough I knew that it would be wise to make a muslin. I cut a straight size 14 and I think the fit is not bad at all. As you can see in the photo below there is a bit of excess in the sleeve, something that can be easily remedied for next time.  I did make two alterations. I lengthened the skirt by 2", without this it would have been ridiculously short on me
