Pattern Review: Flo-Jo Boutique Eye Mask Making Kit


Despite having lots of dresses cut out and on my sewing table I didn't have much in the way of hand-stitching to take along to this month's sewing group meetup. This inspired me to sew up the Flo-Jo Boutique eye mask making kit and did this in two leisurely hours whilst chatting and drinking tea!

The kit comes with everything you need except scissors. This includes fabric, pattern, instructions, pins, needle and thread. The instructions are very easy to follow and everything is sewn by hand, no need at all for a sewing machine. My only (and extremely trivial) dislike was that I felt the needle provided was too large for the types of fabric being used. Anyone with any sewing supplies will be able to substitute this, but I did feel that the needle was really quite thick.

I am delighted with how this turned out. I use eye masks all the time at home, and especially when I travel so I know it will get used. This kit was a Christmas present from a good friend that has seen me sleep in them many a time as well as knowing my love for sewing. 


Another reason this is such a great present is because it is not something that I would ever buy for myself. I hardly ever buy Liberty fabric, but to have it as an eye mask feels very luxurious. Lastly it is great that once you have made it you can reuse the pattern again and again. 


One lady at my sewing group commented how I could make it up again and give them as presents. Given my track record of sewing for other people I doubt I will ever do this, but it is actually a great idea! However it is a great way of using up scraps of fabric. Particularly if you have a cherished fabric and would like a keepsake.

    The bit about sewing for other people made me laugh out loud! ;-) And a good reminder that I still have the knicker set from you. Currently waiting for my sewing mojo to return...

Pattern Review: SonofaCrossStitch - Pride Tattoo PDF Pattern I am back with some instant gratification cross stitch. This simple pattern is from SonofaCrossStitch  and is the PDF Pride pattern .  This is a really simple pattern that I bought as a stash buster. I had some 16 count aida purchased during a clearance sale and I used up some of my leftover threads from previous projects. The pattern does have suggested fabric and thread suggestions, should you wish to follow them. It is also available as a kit, which would make nice present.  I have tried various finishing methods for my cross stitch, and decided on trying the felt backing method for a hoop, found in my Cross Stitcher Magazine. Update and New Patterns

  New Look Patterns!   I have been a bit absent of late. This is partly because I have been away with work, but mostly because I took a sad trip to Wadderville.   But anyway, at least I have some new patterns (thanks to the New Look sale which meant these were all £2.95 each!) to soothe my wadder woes...     New Look 6122     I would make this pattern as a cute halter top - not a dress. I would like to maybe make view A as a cute top too.     New Look Pattern 6122       Who doesn't love a fun maxi dress - I think that the shorter version is nice too, but I would have to make sure that it doesn't bunch too much at the tummy, especially as this pattern is drafted for a knit rather than a woven.     New Look 6782   Nothing very exciting here - just some standard wardrobe building.     New Look 6123     I have seen lovely reviews of this dress and think that it would be particularly nice in a stretch woollen.   Ne

February Garment of the Month

Pattern Review: Vogue 1387 I have to admit that my sewing mojo has been so low I wasn't sure February's garment was going to happen. Quite a few fellow sewers have mentioned that they have not been as productive as hoped during February, so maybe there has been something in the air? That said, I pulled it out of the bag to finish my muslin for this  Vogue 1387 Rebecca Taylor pattern. I initially fell in love with the pleats in the shoulders and the sleeve bands. Aren't they fab little details?? However there have been mixed reviews on Pattern Review, so although the line drawings looked simple enough I knew that it would be wise to make a muslin. I cut a straight size 14 and I think the fit is not bad at all. As you can see in the photo below there is a bit of excess in the sleeve, something that can be easily remedied for next time.  I did make two alterations. I lengthened the skirt by 2", without this it would have been ridiculously short on me
